SEVERE BURNS ARE FATAL TO MARY SHIELDS

Dress Caught Fire While Trying To Keep Warm, NATIVE OF COUNTY

Funeral Services To Be Held Sunday Morning.

The intense cold weather in Bloomington the past few days indirectly claimed its first victim Friday evening when Mrs. Mary E. Shields, 64, who was severely burned Thursday while standing in front of an open fire at her home in Salt Creek township, died at 5:37 at the Bloomington hospital as a result of these burns.

At no time since Mrs. Shields’ admittance to the hospital Thursday had hope been held out for her recovery, as her back and arms were badly burned and she suffered burns of a lesser degree on her abdomen. Her condition was made more grave by the fact that she had rolled in the snow in an attempt to put out the flames and then Tain [sic] for several hours without medical aid. She remained conscious throughout her suffering.

Mrs. Shields was a native of Monroe county and had lived all of her life on the farm on which she was living at the time of the accident. She was a member of the church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.

One son, Fred Shipley, of Bloomington, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one brother, John Wesley Chandler, who made his home with the deceased, and four sisters, Mrs. Minnie Bales, Mrs. Dame Stevens of Spencer, Mrs. Rhoda Murdock of Heber, Utah, and Mrs. Margaret Hays survive.

One son, Thomas Aaron Shields, died in 1917 in an army hospital at Bordeaux, France from lobar pneumonia. He is buried at Merignac, Gironde, France. Mrs. Shields was a Gold Star Mother.

Funeral services for the victim will be held Sunday morning at 10 o’clock at the Knight Ridge church with Rev. George Deckard officiating. Pallbearers will include Paul Schramm, Homer Beaver, Mac Elkins, Joe Wilson, Nelson Chambers and Isaac Butcher. The body will lie in state at the Weir Funeral Home until 9 o’clock Sunday morning. Burial will take place at the Chandler cemetery near Mrs. Shields’ home.
