CHARLES LELAND
Charles Leland, died at Long Branch yesterday morning after a short illness. He caught a severe cold recently in returning from Lake Champlain in a small steam yacht which he bought there. The immediate cause of his death was a disease of the kidneys. He was one of the famous hotel-keepers of that name, and Warren Leland, who was associated with him in the Ocean House at Long Branch, is now the only surviving brother. Four nephews are engaged in the hotel business—one at Chicago, one at Springfield, Ill, and two in New York. Mr. Leland was born at Landgrove, Vt., in a hotel called the Green Mountain Coffee House, which was kept by his father. His first experience in this city was in the old Carleton House, and after being at the Bond Street House and then at the Union Place Hotel, he joined his brother Simeon in 1846 in the charge of the Clinton Hotel in Beckman st, where the Temple Court building is. In 1852 four brothers, of whom Charles was one, opened the Metropolitan Hotel. They began there the custom of serving meals continuously from 3 o'clock in the morning to midnight. The hotel remained under the control of the Lelands for twenty years. In 1864, Charles and two of his brothers bought the Grand Union at Saratoga and spent a great deal of money in improvements. In 1873, Charles and Warren Leland bought the Ocean House at Long Branch, where they have since been.

The funeral will take place tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Rev. Dr. Houghton's church. The burial will be at Woodlawn. Mr. Leland's family consists of two married daughters.
