Dwight Lyman Moody "Del" Wertz was born October 11, 1888 in Canton, Ohio. He was the second of five children born to Henry Wertz and Anna Elizabeth Smith.

Del was a shortstop for the Buffalo Buffeds of the Federal League during the 1914 season. He spent three games with the Buffeds, scoring once.

Del also played three years of professional football in the Ohio League. He spent time with the Shelby Blues, Elyria Athletics, Akron Indians and Youngstown Pros.

Del married Gwendolyn Ruth Thompson on January 27, 1917. Together they had three daughters: Elizabeth Jane (1919 – 2011), Roxana Ruth (1920 – 2006), and Nila Catherine (1922 – 2008).

Del passed away on May 26, 1958 at the age of 69.Professional baseball player in 1914. Shortstop for the Buffalo Buffeds.
