Author. He was a pioneer of the modern detective story. With his first mystery novel, "The Lerouge Affair" (1866), Gaboriau introduced the brilliant Parisian police detective Monsieur Lecoq, who was both a master of disguise and a genius with scientific methods of crime scene investigation. The character was based on Francois Vidocq (1775-1857), a real-life criminal-turned-policeman. The most famous fictional detective before Sherlock Holmes, Monsieur Lecoq went on to such further adventures as "File No. 113" (1867), and "Monsieur Lecoq" (1869). Gaboriau was born in Saujon, Charente-Martime, France, and was a journalist in Paris before turning to fiction. He died of a pulmonary aneurysm at 40.
