Samuel was married to Susan Broomfield on December 16, 1860 in Platte County, Missouri. They had nine children, eight of which are known as: Laura E. (Butner) Miller, Margaret A. Butner, Josephine Butner, John W. Butner, Henry Joseph Butner, Samuel E. Butner, Ella M. Butner, and Elvin Butner.

Samuel J Butner was born in Stokes Co. N. C, June 29, 1838; died August 7 1907; moved with his parents to Missouri when he was 13 years of age; married Susan Brumfield December 16, 1860. To them were born nine children, five of whom have died. The four that survive him are Henry and Elvin Butner, Mrs. John Miller of Fredonia and Mrs. Lawrence Hanson of Tallyrand Tp. Mrs. Butner died in 1882.
Samuel Butner was baptized in infancy and had been a member of the M. E. Church, served in the Civil War in Company C, third MO Cavalry; came to Kansas in 1872- to Wilson Co. in 1874 and had been here ever since. He was a good citizen and a devoted husband and father. Funeral services were held at the home of his son-in-law, Lawrence Hanson August 8, 1907, conducted by Rev. Wm Spencer and burial was in the family cemetery in Fall River tp, South precinct.
