Neal Guthrie died at his home in Pleasant Hill, Wednesday, December 12, 1946. He had been in poor health for the past several years, and his condition had been critical during the past two weeks. Mr. Guthrie was born in Pike county and lived in the Pleasant Hill community his entire life. He followed the occupation of farming and some years ago was engaged in apple growing as a partner of his brother, John W. Guthrie. He was a leading citizen of the community and had taken part in all community affairs. He had always been a leader and gave liberal support to the Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill of which organization he was a faithful member. He was liberal and charitable with those in need and his many favors will long be remembered.
Neal Otis Guthrie, son of Daniel and Margaret Zerenberg Guthrie was born March 3, 1872, and departed this life December 12, 1946, at the age of 74 years, 9 months and 9 days. He was the youngest of a family of six children, all preceding him in death, except the oldest brother, Charles Guthrie of Pleasant Hill. The others were Christine Crowder, Katherine Davis, Flora Hamilton and John W. Guthrie.
He was married to Cora Buchanan, Oct. 5, 1898. To this union eleven children were born: Mrs. Raymond Smith of Pittsfield, Mrs. Alta Walker of Quincy, Mrs Guy Yokem, Mrs. Vaude Looper, Orville, Burdette, Dan, Arnold, Ernest and Junior Guthrie all of Pleasant Hill. The youngest son, Cleo, died at the age of four years. He also leaves 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held in the Baptist church in Pleasant Hill, Saturday afternoon, December 14th at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Fred Peak of Alton, a former pastor. Burial was in Crescent Heights cemetery at Pleasant Hill.
