Lois Ann Garten

Lois Ann Garten, age 79, of Coal City, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at Raleigh General Hospital, following an extended illness.

Born December 11, 1933, in Kentucky, to the late Arch White and Florida Mae Fugate White.

Ms. Garten operated the Old Country Store in Coal City for many years with her husband.

She also enjoyed gardening and planting flowers. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and she was also a founding member of the Sunset Hills Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and was a Sunday School teacher. She also enjoyed traveling and was a volunteer for Commission on Aging.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Garten; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Those surviving include her daughters, Debra Fink of Coal City and Patricia Ann Keaton (Kenneth) of Sophia; brothers, Ellis White of Coal City and Tommy White (Mary) of North Carolina; sisters, Carol Sears (Wayne) of Grandview, Lena Bragg (Gene) of Kentucky, Pat Lear of Hamon, Ind., and Barbara Woody (Dale) of North Carolina; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2013, at the Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Beckley, with Rev. Tim Mitchem officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
