Erwin E. Schumacher, 71, of Hamel, died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Hospital, Highland.
A retired farmer, he had clerked until about a year ago in Ernst Hardware store, Hamel, owned by his son-in-law.
He was born Aug. 15, 1896, in Alhambra township, the son of Fred W. and Sophia Sanders Schumacher. He was married April 7, 1918, to Emma Blase, who survives, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Hamel. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last Sunday. Surviving besides his wife are four daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Hilda) Moehle, Edwardsville, Route 3, Mrs. William (Helen) Klausing, St. Jacob, Mrs. Albert (Ruth) Ernst Jr., Hamel, and Mrs. Vernon (Irma) Ernst, Springfield; three sons, Elmer of Edwardsville, Hilbert of Hamel and Erwin Schumacher Jr., Creve Coeur, Mo.; 21 grandchildren, and one brother, Fred H. Schumacher, Alhambra. A sister is deceased.
He was a member of the Hamel Businessmen's Club and of the men's club at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Friends may call at the Dauderman Mortuary in Hamel after 2 p.m. Saturday.
Last rites will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Bolin, pastor, in St. Paul's Church at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
