C.A. Blaisdell, contractor and builder, who has resided in Auburn for several years, and who has built a beautiful home on Forest Hill avenue, committed suicide by drowning last Monday night. Blaisdell tied a 100 pound rock or rather wired it, to his neck, and jumped in the ditch not far from the Blaisdell home. Financial trouble is given as the cause of the act.
Blaisdell was supposed to be quite well to do, but recently lost heavily on some property visited by floods in Southern California. Blaisdell and W.P. Cook, a real estate man, had been negoitiating for the sale of one of Blaisdell's houses, but the sale was temporarily halted because Cook could not secure the immediate cash. The men parted about 10 o'clock on Monday morning. Blaisdell left his home about noon, saying that he was going to call on W.A.J. Smith. When he did not return, Mrs. Blaisdell called up the Smith home, and learned that her husband had not been there. She reported her suspicions to her neighbor, Mrs. William Schaller, who with friends scoured the immediate vicinity for a trace of the missing man. They finally found a hat and vest on the bridge crossing the ditch. W.B. Ogden, W.P. Cook, W.J.A. Smith, William Schaller and John Spencer joined in the search, and later dragged the ditch and the body was located.
Deceased was about 56 years of age. He leaves an invalid wife and several relatives in the East. A brother is expected to arrive from Wisconsin, and the funeral will probably be held tomrorow afternoon. Coroner Hislop held an inquest yesterday morning and the verdict was that of suicide.
