William Timothy (Bill) Murphy

Resident of San Mateo

William Timothy (Bill) Murphy was born on January 24, 1930, the youngest of Timothy and Ita Murphy's six children. He grew up in San Mateo and went to grammar school in Burlingame at the St. Catherine of Siena parish school, and remained a parishioner there his entire life, sending his own children to school there. He was in the first freshman class when Serra High School opened in San Mateo, graduating in 1948. He went on to graduate from St. Mary's college in Moraga in 1952.

Following a stint in the Army during the Korean War, Bill went to work in the automotive business in San Francisco, where he met his future wife Kathryn (Kiewatt). They married in 1958 and started a family that grew to six children: Barbara Sternberger (Mike), Tim (Patty), Moira Trabert (Rob), Martha Darcy (Steve), Toby (Alan), and Sheila Cerna (Jim). He retired after 25 years as a Superintendent of Delivery at Zellerbach Paper Company in South San Francisco.

Bill leaves eight grandchildren: Zachary, Hayley, Spencer, Charley, Olivia, Cameron , Emily and Georgia, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Sr. Kathleen Murphy, SND and Mary Brady. He is survived by his brother John Murphy of San Carlos; Elizabeth Murphy of San Mateo and Eileen Giannini of Half Moon Bay.

Bill was very active at St. Catherine's and many church and charity organizations, including St. Vincent de Paul and Nocturnal Adoration Society. Everyone was welcome at the Murphy house; he liked to tell his guests to "come again, and bring a friend". Bill was the life of the party, always ready with stories and jokes. He never forgot his friends, and there was always a place at the table for a guest.

Bill and Kathy had celebrated fifty-three years of marriage in January.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Sunday, July 10 at 2pm at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1310 Bayswater Ave. in Burlingame.
