Catherine was born to the infamous Nellie Marston of Woodland, California and son of Civil War Vet, Jules Nelk. She is the younger of two children born to Jules and Nellie. Her older sister is Mary Fern.

Having been abandoned by her father in March of 1896, her mother, Nellie, slipped back into her old habitual fast life of alcohol and prostitution. Frances, sister of Nellie, petitioned for the guardianship of the young Nelk girls, her nieces and was granted so in Woodland the latter of 1896. Frances took in young Mary and Catherine as her own, her and her husband being childless. Catherine became a student nurse in the Merritt Hospital in Oakland, California by 1916. She suffered the loss of her mother, Nellie, in 1897, the loss of her adopted father, James, in 1902, the loss of her Grandmother, Catherine, in 1903, and the loss of her adopted mother and aunt, Frances, in 1906/7/8?. Mary and Catherine became boarders in a Catholic School on G St. in Sacramento under the Collins surname. Catherine then went on to marry Frank B. Sparks and moved to Stockton. She had two twin daughters, Frances Fern and Beatrice B. Catherine died in 1932 for reasons unknown and rests in the Marston Plot in St. Joseph's in Woodland.
