After Chinese fashion, the body, duly embalmed, was laid in a casket of Chinese cedar, hermetically sealed. This was so stained with Ningpo varnish as to look like rosewood. The casket, with its lid ten inches thick, weighing 1500 pounds, was borned by 24 Chinese to a vault of solid masonry six feet below ground and more than two feet above and there was deposited in the portion of ground so recently purchased by Mr. Faris himself for possible cemetary uses, adjoining the mission garden which he loved to cultivate, with the mountains near by keeping watch over the grave. The Chinese say the vault will withstand the tooth of time for five hundred years.
