Doris Armstrong, age 92, a lifelong Fayette County resident, passed away on Tuesday morning January 8, 2013 at Heritage House in Connersville.
Born February 6, 1920 in Fayette County, Indiana, she is the daughter of the late Errol and Ruth Kline Archey.
Doris is a 1938 graduate of Connersville High School. She furthered her education with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Ball State University in 1942. She received a Master's of Science Degree in Special Education from Ball State University in 1966.
She taught school in the Fayette County School System for over forty years, teaching at Waterloo, Grand Avenue, Fifth Street, Eighth Street and Maplewood schools. She was one of the first Special Education teachers in Fayette County.
Doris became the bride of Howard "Boney" Armstrong on September 30, 1944. Mr. Armstrong died on December 20, 2003.
For many years, they owned races horses and were very active in the Trotting and Pacing Association both in Indiana and Ohio. She was a member of the Indiana Standard Bred Horse Association, Ohio Harness Racing Association and had assisted Boney as the Indiana Trotting and Pacing Association Secretary/Treasurer from 1970 to 1980.
She was also a member of the Central Christian Church, Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Teachers Organization, American Association of University Women, Indiana and Fayette County Retired Teachers Association, Fayette County Senior Citizens, Farm Bureau, and Life member of the Fayette County Free Fair where she served as Race Secretary for 30 years.
Doris is survived by two sisters in law, Mildred Armstrong of Seymour, IN and Betty Armstrong of Rushville, IN; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-great nieces.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by sisters, Olive Hill, Virginia Mullan and an infant brother.
Funeral services will be conducted at Urban Winkler Funeral Home on Thursday January 10, 2012 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Michael Sinclair of Central Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow at Dale Cemetery.
Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Regenstrief Boys and Girls Club.
