Adam "Sparky" was born in Schaffer, Russia, the son of Gottlieb & Elizabeth (Gerber) Ertel. His ancestors immigrated from Germany to Russia in the 1760s as did many others at the request of Catherine the Great. They formed German communities & maintained their German language & heritage for the next 150 years. This proved to be disastrous when the Bolsheviks rose to power, the Germans were treated cruelly, may being starved to death or shot. Most of them that did not flee were sent to Siberia. In January 1921, at the age of 7 and only 1 month after the death of his mother, Adam was packed up by is father & the family (brother Gottieb, John & sister Amelia) fled to America. The journey took 2 years because it was necessary for them to live in Germany long enough to accumulate the money needed for the boat trip to the American shores. The Ertels arrived in Sheyboygan, Door, Wisconsin in 1923 where they spent the next several years before moving to a farm in northern Wisconsin near Brantwood. Sparky came to Sagola in 1935, staying with friends, the Kutke family. Sparky & Glenice Byers were married Oct. 1, 1936. They are the parents of 2 children: Evelyn Anita-April 29, 1937 m. Norman Peterson on June 23, 1956 and Darryl Lewis-Oct 27, 1938 m.1 Elizabeth Sparpana of Iron Mountain on Apr 21, 1957; m.2 Nancy Lee Beland Renwick on Tecumseh, MI on May 2, 1975. Sparky worked for the Northern Sawmill Company, Ford Motor Company in Iron Mountain and the Milwaukee Railroad. More of this family can be found in "Sagola's Early Years: A History of Sagola, Michigan".
