Greek Poet. Author of the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey." Virtually nothing is known about Homer's life. It is believed that he was born in the ancient city of Ionia in Greece (now part of present-day Turkey) in the 9th or 8th century BC. Most modern scholars agree that Homer composed both the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey" orally, but did not literally write them. Ancient Greeks saw these works as symbols of Hellenistic unity and believed that they were sources for moral lessons. An influence to Western literature, the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey" have been translated many times. According to legend Homer is buried in Ios, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea.
