John Combs was the son of
Archdale Combs and Elizabeth Butler.

It is believed that John's grandfather,
John Combs, was the immigrant to the new
country. John Combs was born in 1589, in
Yorkshire,England U.K. and he came to the
America's on May 20, 1619 at the age of 30.
He traveled on the ship, "Marigold"
and sailed from England to Jamestown,
Virginia.

He married Hannah Ann 'Mason'
in Virginia and they
were the parents of
two known children:
Joseph
Mason (Sr.)John Combs was the first born son of Archdale Combs & Elizabeth Butler??? (Maiden not proven). He was born circa 1664 in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia. There is possible discrepancies on the name of his wife (Ann, Hannah surnames Tutt or Mason) or if he married more than once or if possibly the two women were one in the same. That being said, there are seven children that are documented to be the children of John Combs- Elizabeth, Archdale, Judith, Sarah, Mary, Aymee(Amy) and the youngest Mason. John died between 11 Dec 1716 when he signed his will, and 7 Feb 1717 when said will was proved in Richmond County, Virginia. http://www.combs-families.org/combs/families/c-j1662.htm

Some older research believes that a Joseph Combs born circa 1689 in the Stafford County, VA area was a son of John's via a previous marriage. However through the advancement of male lineage Y-DNA testing and the subsequent testing of Joseph's male Combs descendants, he has been proven not to be a descendant of this Combs line, he belongs to an entirely different Haplogroup (R1b). Was he adopted? No one knows. There are a few lines in and around this region using the surname Combs that some descendants have linked to Archdale in the past. The line of Archdale is the only Combs line that belongs to Haplogroup (I2a1b1), the other Combs lines that have had males that have Y-DNA tested, none of which belong to this haplogroup, meaning they do not share a common male ancestor.
