Rites Held Sunday For Fred H. Backus

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. Peter's United Church of Christ for F. H. Buckus a lifelong resident of Yellowhead Township who died Thursday, March 28, in Danville Veterans Hospital following a lingering illness.

The Rev. A. F. Braun officiated and burial was in the Momence Cemetery. The Marshall Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Born May 31, 1892 in Yellowhead Township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dedrick Backus, he married Cora Kahney January 21, 1920 in Grant Park. The widow survives.
Also surviving are a son, Bernum of Momence; daughter, Mrs. Bernadette Fick of Grant Park; six grandchildren; brothers, Emil of Owosso, Michigan, Edward of Harvey; sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Zimmerman, Mrs. Alvina Hamann, Mrs. Edna Wuerth, all of Grant Park, Mrs. Tillie Schultz of Flushing, Michigan, Mrs. Carrie Heller of Crete and Mrs. Alice Hamann of Owosso.

A retired farmer, Mr. Buckus was a lifelong member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Grant Park. A veteran of World War I who served in France, he was a charter member of Star Post 295, Grant Park American Legion and a past Commander of the post.
An honor guard was composed of members of American Legion Star Post 295, of which Mr. Backus was a charter member. Guard members were William Lietz, Sr., Henry Weber, B. C. Hamann, William Koester, Edward G. Hamann and Howard Davis.
Pallbearers were William Luetz, Sr., William Thorne, Howard Davis, B. C. Hamann, Henry Weber and A. M. Unruh.
