Hazel was the first woman from the state of Washington to enter military service in July 1942. She was a graduate of the first WAAC (Women's Army Auxiliary Corps) Officer Training School at Fort Des Moines, Iowa;

She was also honored when Major General James W. Sutherland, then Commanding General of CDCEC unveiled and named a WWII Sherman tank "Hazel" in honor of her contribution through her instructional program for that organization....
During the Second World War, Fort Des Moines hosted the formation of the first Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), later renamed the Women's Army Corps (WAC), training 72,000 troops and commissioning the first female officers for non-combat duty between 1942-1945. There were 436 initial WAAC officers. The success of the WACs freed 250,000 male soldiers for combat duty in Europe and the South Pacific.
