James was a son of D. L. H. and N. R. Hilton and a grandson of Daniel Hilton. His grandfather had brought his family from England to the new world about 1816 and eventually moved to Winneconne, WI, where he passed away in 1882 at 96 years of age.

James married Mary Jane Randall on December 15, 1868 in Vivian, Waseca, MN. They had 3 known children: Addie A.
(b. 1869/70), Dr. Cora Elnora Hilton Alcorn and Dr. George Francis Hilton.

He was a mechanic and became an architect. About 1870, the family moved to Fremont, WI, where James spent his remaining years before passing away in Ogdensburg in 1886.
