On Monday June 16th this community was startled by the news of the death of Mrs. Meloy at Rochester, Minn. She had been in California during the winter and returned to her home in the 15th of May but was in failing health, yet the end did not seem to be so near. She went to Rochester hoping to prolong her life. There she underwent a surgical operation which she survived by nine days.
Mrs. Meloy was the only daughter of Thomas and Margaret McNulty. She was born and brought up in Shullsburg where she spent her life with the exception of a few winters in California. Her father was a successful and leading business merchant of this city in the 60's and 70's. He accumulated considerable of this worlds goods which Bessie inherited. His death occurred in 1878 but her mother lived with her until July 1908. She had one brother, Thomas, who died when only fifteen years of age.
On the 18th day of July 1883 she was united in marriage, by Father James Kinsella, with Charles J. Meloy of Hastings, Minn. He also became a prominent merchant of this city. They lived happily together for nearly twenty five years and two children were born to them, a son and daughter. The latter died in infancy and Charles T. passed out of this life about a year and a half ago.
An aunt, a number of cousins and a large circle of friends are left to mourn her demise. She was a truly Christian woman, possessed of fine qualities, amiable, kind, benevolent and devoted to her domestic and religious duties. Her funeral took place from St. Matthew's church on the morning of June 20th with Solemn Mass of requiem celebrated for her by Father Croke, and Rev. M.F. McQuaid acted as deacon, Rev. Wm. Gille as subdeacon. Then the body was borne to the cemetery and placed beside her beloved husband and son. Many members of the L.C.B. A. to which she belonged for many years attended in a body.
The pall bearers were: Judge J.B. Simpson, J.P. Williams, John Fleming, John Casey, M.A. O'Brien and John O'Toole.
