Charles J. Meloy, one of the most respected citizens of Shullsburg, died at his home Friday noon, Feb. 21, 1908, after a lingering illness. Charles J. Meloy was born in Pottsville, Penn., Sept. 19, 1849. He received a common school education and removed to Hastings, Minn., in 1857, where he remained until 1859, when he went to St. Paul, Minn. and various places in Dakota, engaging in the railroad business, as clerk in the auditing department, station agent and traveling auditor.
He came to Wisconsin in 1883 and settled at Shullsburg, where he has since resided. He was elected to the State Assembly in 1890, receiving a good majority over the republican candidate, which showed his popularity as Lafayette is a strong republican county.
Deceased was engaged in the hardware business in this city up to the time of his death, and was a successful businessman. In 1883 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth McNulty, who, with one sons, Charles T., survives him.
Mr. Meloy was a progressive business man, and every acquaintance was a friend. He was a good husband and father, a staunch member of the Catholic church, and ever ready to assist those less fortunate than himself in the struggle of life.
The funeral was held Monday morning at ten o'clock from St. Matthews church, and the attendance was very large, the floral tributes from his many friends attesting the esteem in which he was held.
