In December 1863 he enlisted in Company I, 21 Regiment Michigan Infantry. Afterward promoted to captain of the second regiment. He was disabled in 1864 and resigned. He arrived in Harbor Springs in 1874, and engaged in the real estate business, the firm at that time being C. W. Ingalls & Son (EMMET CO, MI). He had been engaged in business for many years carrying on farming, mill business and general merchandising. Ingalls actively engaged in locating soldiers upon homesteads after the lands of the county came into market and has continued to carry on real estate business until 1884.
