DAVID WARD SR
1948 - 2013

On January 20, 2013, David D. Ward Sr., 64, of Gilbert, departed this life from Logan Regional Medical Center and went to meet his Lord and Savior, his precious daddy, Cassie Ward, and many other dear family and friends waiting for him in Heaven.

He fought a long battle here on Earth and was looking forward to going home.

David was born November 24, 1948, in Caples, W.Va.

He was a 1966 graduate of Man High School and a retired coal miner and owner of Trinity Heart Construction.

David is survived by his high school sweetheart, best friend and devoted wife of 46 years, Linda Evans Ward. He described her as the "love of his life" and called her "Cakes".

From their marriage they were blessed with three children, April (Ronnie) Mounts, David (Brittney) Ward Jr., and Angela (David) Sparks; 10 grandchildren, Justin (Sarah) Sparks, Ryan Davis, Cheyenne Ward (fiancé Tyler Griffith), David Ward III, Devon Poe, Gracie Sparks, Brooke Sparks, EmyLeigh Mitchell, Casey Sparks, and PaisLeigh Ward and one great-grandchild: Colton David Griffith, all of Gilbert. When all their children and grandchildren were together David would often look to Linda and say "look what a beautiful mess we've created".

David is also survived by his beautiful mother, Virginia (Lee) Ward of Man, whom he credited with giving him his strong will and his knowledge of Jesus Christ. His two brothers who gave him the sisters he'd never had and his beautiful niece and nephews: Paul (Eula) Ward of Jackson, Ohio, and Michael (Tonia) Ward of Man, his niece Michelle (Christopher) Short of Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., and his nephews, Jamie Ward of Jackson and Michael (Tabitha) Ward of Man. He had very special relationships with them and they spent many years traveling and singing together. He was proud of the God serving men his brothers are and described them as his first friends and playmates. He loved their children like his own. David was "Poppy" to a host of young people that he met through church, his grandchildren, or his love of sports. He considered Morgan Estep and Anthony, James and Steven Vance his honorary grandchildren. He cherished and loved all the family and friends that he leaves behind. He often talked of the memories that he had with his best friend, Scotty Sammons, and his special relationship with his honorary son, William "Joe" Poe, and his brother-in-law, James Evans Jr.

David fought long and hard in his battle with heart and kidney disease. The Lord placed some very special people in his life during this time – Dr. Faridi, Christie Reed, and the entire staff of West Virginia Dialysis, Carolyn "Pringles" Gibson, Teresa Harvey and the staff of Dignity Hospice. The family wishes to thank his niece, Tabatha Evans Lester, who went out of her way to make his dialysis experience the best it could be, his dear friend Bonnie Lester who always made sure he had everything he needed, and his friends and pastors Anthony and Denise Hudgins and the Eagle Sanctuary family.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Mounts Funeral Home with Bishop Anthony Hudgins, Rev. Doug Sparks and Rev. Paul Ward officiating. He will be laid to rest at Hollywood Cemetery in Gilbert.

Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be David "Davey" Ward Jr., Jamie Ward, Michael "Mikee" Ward, David Sparks, Justin Sparks, Ryan Davis, David Ward III and Devon Poe.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Mounts, James Evans Jr., Scotty Sammons, Michael Thornsbury, Howard Lee, Gary Stepp, Ronnie Staten, William "Joe" Poe, William "Bill" Murphy and Tom White.
