Ethel Walling, 81, of Bemidji died Tuesday, June 25, 1991, at her home. Funeral services were at Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji. Interment, following cremation, will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Walling was born Sept. 13, 1901, at Monongahela, Pa., the daughter of Elmer and Amelia Crookham. She grew up and went to school there, then moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where she worked as a secretary and clerk in a sales office. She married I. Elmer Walling June 21, 1931, at Cleveland. They moved to Bemidji in 1932 and started the Index Stationery Shop here and operated it until his death in 1963. She continued to operate the store until selling it in 1967. She continued to work at the store until 1984 and later worked in the Foster Grandparent program at Lincoln Elementary School. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, involved in its women's group, choir and Sunday school, and served as church clerk for many years.

She is survived by a son, Jim (Louise) Walling of Austin, Texas; a stepdaughter, Kathryn (James) Pritchard of Mayfield Village, Ohio; and two grandchildren; Heidi and Kristi.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Doug; and seven brothers and sisters.
