He married Mary Relyea 9/8/1820 and had 13 children. He was a pioneer of Cayuga County having come from Guilderland, his early home near Schenectady, to Sterling by wagon in 1823. "He was greatly esteemed and honored by his fellow townsmen by election to many responsible offices, having been supervisor, assessor, and justice of the peace. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Sterling Valley and was an elder for 55 years." He and Mary celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary before his death resulting from a fall out of an apple tree at the age of 92. Mary lived to 97.
