Moved from NH to Barre, VT when he was 7 years old. His father and brother Samuel soon left for Ohio and were never thereafter heard from. His mother lived with Joshua Jr. until her death in March 1825. Although not yet of age when his father went away, he assumed the responsibilities of the farm and took care of the family.

Joshua married Eunice Martin, 30 Mar 1857, in Williamstown, VT. They settled in neighboring Barre, VT and had 11 known children:

-Lewis Pettengill (1817-1895)
-Nancy Pettengill (1819-1901)
-Lucinda Pettengill (1821-1914)
-Candace Pettengill (1823-1903)
