Romaltus was born Oct. 26, 1909, in Neu-Baden (Gudewitsch), Russia, the son of Wendelin and Elizabeth (Zerr) Wangler. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1912 and settled on a farmstead southwest of Napoleon. He was raised on the family farm and received his elementary education in rural Logan County schools. He continued to live and work on the family farm until his marriage to Christina Wald, Oct. 18, 1932, at St. Anthony Catholic Church near Napoleon. Romaltus became a naturalized citizen of the United States in May 1940. They raised 12 children and farmed in rural Logan County, southwest of Napoleon until 1976 when they retired and moved to Napoleon. In 1993, they moved to Bismarck and became residents of Marillac Manor where he had since resided. Christina died Feb. 17, 1995.

Romaltus was a member of St. Philip Neri Knights of Columbus, and the Napoleon Golden Age Center. He served as a board member of the Mannheim District School, he served on the board of directors of Napoleon Care Center and was a rural school bus driver for many years. Romaltus loved to visit, sing and tell stories to all who would listen. He especially liked to play cards and pool. He gave his family countless lessons on life and he will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Christina; his parents; two brothers, Wendelin and John; two sisters, Veronica Vetter and Agatha Wald; and one grandson, Dion Schumacher.
