According to the Application for Headstone or Marker for Military Veterans 1925 - 1963 for William Harrison Back, he served from 10-2-1917 to 6-19-1919 out of Arizona. He was a Pvt in Co. D 158th Infantry, 40th Division. His brother, Alfred Back, served in the same company.

While the death certificate indicates he was born in Arizona, he was actually born in KS as well as his older brother. The family migrated from KS to AZ circa 1893 where the remainder of the children of Othe and Estella were born.

William was one of six children of Othe and Estella (Mead) Back. The surname is interchangeably spelled Bach and Back. William, commonly called 'Pretty Bill' lived most of his life in Arizona.

In 1920 he married Lulu Valentine Fields; they later divorced; they had no children.

Circa 1937 William migrated to California. According to his death certificate he worked as a packer for a trucking company.
