Lawrence Hunter "Fred" Hartless, 82, of Buena Vista, died Sunday, June 7, 1998. He was born April 20, 1916, in Rockbridge County, the son of the late Charles H. Hartless and Mary Clark Hartless.

He was a machine operator for N&W Railway and was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Belle Chittum Hartless, and two sons, Charles Hartless and Lawrence Hartless. He is survived by two daughters, Annie Hartless of Midvale and Gloria DeBerry of Buena Vista, and one son, Teddy Hartless of Glen Burnie, Md. He also is survived by seven stepchildren, Geneva Mueller of Pittsburgh, Pa., David Flint of Martinsville and Lois Bunch, Shirley Ramsey, Charles Flint, Henry Flint and Johnny Flint, all of Buena Vista. He also is survived by 39 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at Lomax Funeral Home, with Garvis Wheeler and Clyde Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at Lomax Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to Buena Vista Rescue Squad.
