Alfred married Aug 9, 1862 in Alna, and then enlisted five days later Aug 14, 1862.
He enlisted in Co. K. 16th Maine Infantry, and was wounded in the knee. He may have returned home on furlough at this time, as a son, William, was born in 1864. Alfred subsequently served in Co. C 1st. Maine Cavalry and Co. F 1st D.C. Cavalry. He was a bugler in the last two regiments. and served for the remainder of the war.
Albert returned to Maine where he worked as a house carpenter. Two additional sons were born there: Edwin in 1866 and John in 1870. They moved to Boston, where Albert worked as an expressman. Four additional children were born in Boston.
Albert and Martha outlived four of their seven children. Of these William died of consumption in 1896, and is likely buried in Maine where he died. Frederick Walter was born in Oct. 18, 1873 and died July 15 1888 of brain fever. Franklin Alfred was born on March 27, 1876 and died on Aug. 18, 1877 of cholera. Mattie M. was born October 9, 1878 and died on Jan. 10 1879 of bronchitis. The younger three children died in Boston, and are not listed as buried in this cemetery.
Albert's other three children were Edwin, John and Maud. It appears that John and Maud did not marry, and that Albert's only descendants might have been through Edwin.
