Hiram was a farmer and was married twice - first to Nancy Martin (b. 1822, md. Feb. 27, 1840) and second to Mary Ann Phillips (March 31, 1859). By his first wife he was the father of Phoebe, Eleanor "Ellen" Ann, John A., Sarah Jane, Susanna, Maria B., Andrew S. and William M. By his second wife, he was the father of Agnes, Thomas, Catherine, Della, and Mary Margaret. The county death records note that he was "killed by accident."
