Following are notes of 50+ years DeLong researcher the late John D. Baldwin III:

FRANS/FRANCIS (1-7-3) was probably born ca 1716-17, no doubt son of John as the children of both Frans and Jonas are known. Also, Frans would have named first son Johannes for paternal grandfather Jan.

1739 - Court of General Sessions, Poughkeepsie: Ordered that an attachment be given to the sheriff of this county to attach the persons of Frans De Langh Jr [junior to his uncle] and Adam Black to answer a contempt of this court. -October Term.

1739/40 - taxed in Beekman, again as Francis Jr., on through 1743/4.

1741 - married by this time Catherine Dymant, no doubt the Catrina bpt. Poughkeepsie to Edward Dymant and wife Christina Schneider. Catrina was perhaps bpt. June 1, 1725; the Poughkeepsie register cuts off on this date for a 13-year break and it is hard to tell whether numerous baptisms were on it or in following weeks.

I suggest that Edwand Dymant (Dimond, Dimon, Dijmarid -etc) was the Edward Dimon bpt. Marblehead Mass; Sept 11, 1687, son of Edward and Rebecca (Norman) Dimon who is also found -as Dimant, Dimond, Diamond). See Founders of Marblehead for ancestry.

Christina Schneider was prob. born Spring 1702, the daughter of Johann Jost Schneider and wife Anna Elisabetha Lohmeyer. See H. Z. Jones' "Palatine Families of NY 1710" and his subsequent "More Palatine Families etc." for their ancestry.

1742 - son bpt. Fishkill.

1744 - daughter bpt. per records of NYC Lutheran Church. Perhaps Frans was on his way out of Dutchess Co. his last tax record was Jan/Feb. 1743/4 though perhaps it is more likely that this baptism was performed in Dutchess by a circuit pastor.

1756 - He and son Johannes had reached Lower Smithfield, Northampton, now Monroe County, Pa by Jan 12 when "frans delon" was listed in Capt. John Vanetta's Company during the last of the French and Indian Wars (Pa. Archives V:l:39). Hillman's Old Danbury says he was here 1750-55, the last year is certain from service. He and Johannes probably both saw action in the Indian Raid Dec '55. There is good argument for assuming that Frans/Francis and son Johannes of Dutchess were the Francis and John of Lower Smithfield. The latter John stated NY birth in his pension declaration, he was 94 at death per a great-granddaughter which correlates with 1742 baptism, he named a daughter Catherine for his mother. (Admittedly John's gravestone makes him several years older than 1741 birth, but conversely his pension declaration makes him several years younger).

1758 - In the Spring of this year, Lt. Hyndshaw, then in command of Fort Hamilton [today's Stroudsburg] was ordered out with his unit. The settlers, fearing a French and Indian raid, sent a petition to Gov. Denny, signed by 28 men including Francis DeLong.

"The Petition of the Distressed Inhabitants of Lower Smithfield Township, in the County of Northampton, most humbly Sheweth:

That your honours petitioners are under some apprehensions that the Company of Soldiers, Commanded by James Hyndshaw, are to be removed from their present Station, and of our being left in a Defenceless posture: That your Petitioners have had Intelligence of a Body of upwards of Three Hundred French and Indians that are coming Down to Distress the frontiers of this province, and as this part at present seems the most Defenceless, it is very probable that we shall be the first attacked; that your petitioners have at present but 12 men allowed by the province, which we humbly apprehend can afford us but little assistance; and further, we humbly Conceive that in case we were attacked by so large a party we must inevitably fall an easy prey to our Cruel Savage Enemy, unless your Honour is pleased to afford us a Reinforcement, which we flatter ourselves we are assured of, your Honour having hitherto since your Succession to this province exercised almost fatherly care over us, for which we return the Most Hearty Thanks; and further, we being well assured that next to Divine Providence your Honour is our Protector, we submit our circumstances to your Superior Knowledge to act for us, who as Loyall Subjects are Determined with your Honour's Assistance to stand against any Enemy that may attempt to invade us, and your Honour's petitioners as in Duty Bound shall ever pray".

Signers were Aaron Depui, John McMichael, Daniel Shoemaker, William Clark Samuel Dupui, Daniel Broadhead, Abraham Mullex, Nicolas Miekle, Leonard Weeser [can he be a relative of Frans' mother Magdalena Weiser?], John Cambden, Frederick Vanerliss, James Hilman, William Smith, John McDoull, William McNab, Edward Conner, Robert Hanah, Daniel McIntosh, Michael Shoer, John Williamson, James Garlinghousing, John Higgins, Isaac Flack, Enoch Freeland, John Drake, Jeremiah Flemmer, Adam Sball AND FRANCIS DELONG. [Frontier Forts l;297 and Penna. Archives iii:358 (which series?)].

Whether any raid transpired I do not know, but as I said would add credibility to the service of son Johannes who was only 16-17 in this last year of the French and Indian Wars.

1761 - taxable in Smithfield (Hist. of Wayne, Pike - and Monroe Cos.)

1763 - Three children were baptised to Frans DeLong and Hannah Carley at the Smithfield Dutch Reformed Church. Two of them were recorded as illegitimate; if there was a marriage to Hannah it was presumably between the second and third births.
I had a far-fetched "theory" regarding Hannah in later years for which see 1806 below.

The name Francis DeLong is found in several other Monroe County records in the period 1786 - 1806. By the end of this period Francis would have been nearly 90 so the records may pertain to a younger man. However I have found no evidence that there were two men of the name in Monroe County. No Fran(ci)s was in 1790 census.

1786 - In account with Aaron Depuy, Smithfield (now Shawnee) store-keeper from 1743 and first signer of the 1758 petition; July 23.

1799 - Capt. Philip Schrawder's Docket Book Jan. 5.

1804 - ditto Dec. 3, also this year in Depuy's account book.

1805 - ditto Jan. 14.

1806 - Docket-Book of John Ransbury JP, Stroud Twp., Feb. 3.

1806 - Under 1763 above, I indicated a theory which as of 1993 can be dismissed. A correspondent obtained a photocopy of the original Smithfield record and Hannah's name certainly appears to be Carley. I had wondered if perhaps it might have been a misreading of LaRue.

Francis' granddaughter Eleanor b. 1765 (dau. of John) married Isaac Winans b. 1764, son of Jacob Winans b. 1726. Jacob's last wife was known to nineteenth century descendants of Jacob as Hannah DeLong and called by some "Little Granny". The little Granny appellation argued against the early twentieth century claim that she was a sister of Eleanor and daughter of John, since she would have been born 1766 or after and thus much younger than Jacob. Ultimately this marriage was found in a Easton Pa. newspaper of 1807 - Mr. Jacob Winnes 82 and Miss Hannah LaRue 79. Thus she was indeed an aged Little Granny but not a DeLong.

My theory, now laid to rest, was that Hannah Carley might really have been Hannah LaRue, the state of her relationship with Frans DeLong being hard to interpret. I thought that she might have married Isaac Winans in old age using her maiden name but this does not now seem likely and I have no other thoughts on my Jacob's descendants believed her to be a DeLong.

Children by Catherine Dymant:

1. Johannes "John" DeLong, Sr. b. 1738-41.
2. Maria DeLong b. 1743/44.

Children by Hannah Carley:

1. Benjamin DeLong b. bef. 1763.
2. Sarah DeLong b. bef. 1763
3. Arie DeLong b. abt. 1763.
