WINNEBAGO - Juanita A. Merchant, 83, a resident of Winnebago for 50 years, died Monday morning, Dec. 10, 2001, in SwedishAmerican Hospital, Rockford. Born July 5, 1918, in Salina, Kan., the daughter of William and Mary Ellen Henderson Higgins. She attended Concordia (Kan.) High School. Juanita married Donald L. Merchant in Rockford he died March 3, 1992. She worked at Amerock Corp., Perk's Western Ranch Store, Ditto's Formal Wear and Fashion Bug. Juanita loved to watch her children and grandchildren participate in sporting activities at Winnebago High School. She was Winnebago's number one basketball fan and an avid follower of the Chicago Bulls. She was active in the PTA and volunteered at Rockford Memorial Hospital as well. Surviving family: sons, Donald (Kathy) Merchant Jr. of Rockford, Jon (Jan) Merchant of Cherry Valley and Jim (Karleen) Merchant of Seward daughters, Sheri (Richard) Hansen of Mandeville, La., Diana (Jim) Kearns of Meaford, Ontario, Canada, Susan (Greg) DeJaynes of Bowling Green, Ky., and Mary (Richard) Schreder of Colleyville, Texas grandchildren, Rich, Debbie and Elisabeth Hansen, April and Michael Kearns, Melissa (Jeff) Alton, Melody Sikes and Michelle Merchant, Greg Jr., Jesse and Jackie DeJaynes, Ashley, Darren and Lauren Schreder, Chris and Matt Butterbaugh and Nicole, Jimmy, Jeff and David Merchant great-grandchild, Cody Sikes brother, James (Shirley) Chase of Junction City, Kan. and sister, JoAnn (Don) Nelson of Aurora, Kan. Also predeceased by parents stepfather, A.W. Chase son, Jeffrey Merchant in 1958 and sister, Wilda (Chase) Shook.
Services at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in Genandt Funeral Home, 602 N. Elida St./Winnebago Road, Winnebago, with the Rev. Gustav E. Bloom officiating. Burial in Middle Creek Cemetery, Winnebago. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in the funeral home. Memorials to Winnebago Fan's Club and to Lifescape (Meals on Wheels). "Go Winnebago."
