According to the book "Pioneer History of Coos and Curry Counties, Or.: Heroic Deeds and Thrilling Adventures of the Early Settlers" by Orvil Dodge, Historian. In the Biographical Appendix (in the back of the book, page 12): "Buckman [Backman], Daniel was born in Indiana, Apr. 4, 1845, and came to Curry Co. in 1885 and settled on Rogue river. His wife's maiden name is Angeline Billings, born in California, Nov. 20, 1868, married June 1, 1887, and they have four children. He owns a good farm."

The Coos County Pioneer and Historical Society was founded in 1891. In 1899, the Society published Orville Dodge's A Pioneer History of Coos and Curry Counties, which is still a standard reference. Republished by the Coos-Curry Pioneer and Historical Association Second Edition With Errata 1969, Western World Publishers-Printers Bandon, Oregon 97411

Daniel and Angeline divorced in August 1899. He died the same year in Marion County, Oregon. (from Oregon State Archives)

1st husband was Daniel Backman born 1860 and dead by the 1900 census where Angie is listed as a widow. She and her children are living with her parents John W. & Adeline Billings. She married her 2nd husband, Frank C. Hawkins (1869-unknown) about 1906.
