CARTER, CLARENCE L.
Clarence Leon Carter has practiced law in Texas more than thirty-five years. He had the routine of practice in a small town, was for several years attorney, and in 1902 he removed to Houston to perform his duties as one of the legal staff of the Southern Pacific Railway. He has since engaged in practice in that city and for many years has been one of the strong lawyers associated together in the firm of Baker, Botts, Parker & Garwood.

Mr. Carter was born at Homer in Angelina County, Texas, November 23, 1869, being the ninth of the large family of children of Joseph John and Jane Eleanor Agnese (Anderson) Carter. His parents were married at Covington in Newton County, Georgia, in 1849, and subsequently removed to Eastern Texas. It was in East Texas that Clarence Leon Carter acquired his common school education, and in September, 1889, he entered the law school of the University of Texas. He was graduated with his law degree in June, 1891. While at the university he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and the Athenaeum Literary Society.

In September, 1891, he entered upon his career as an attorney at Livingston, Texas, and during 1892-93 served as county attorney of Polk County, and was district attorney of the Ninth Judicial District from 1894 to 1899. Mr. Carter was a member of the firm Feagin & Carter, engaged in a general law practice at Livingston, from 1899 to 1902.

After removing to Houston he was division attorney of the Southern Pacific Railway Lines from 1902 to 1906, and during 1906-07 was engaged in a general individual practice. In October, 1907, he became a member of the present firm of Baker, Botts, Parker & Garwood. Mr. Carter is vice president and a director of the Groveton, Lufkin & Northern Railway Company, and is a director in the Union National Bank, the Federal Trust Company and an officer in a number of other corporations in which he is interested. He was honored with election as president of the Harris County Bar Association in 1908, and is also a member of the Texas State and American Bar Associations. He is a member of the University Club of Houston, the Houston Country Club, is a director of the Houston Club, is affiliated with Holland Lodge, A. F. and A. M., Houston Consistory of the Scottish Rite and Arabia Temple of the Mystic Shrine.

Mr. Carter married, January 11, 1893, Miss Alice Lyle Winston, at Moscow, Texas. They have a family of five children: Winston, an attorney, one of the junior associates of the firm Baker, Botts, Parker & Garwood at Houston; Mrs. Alice Carter Casperson, of Houston; Mrs. Iva Carter Murray, of Houston; Ernest T.; and Ruth.
