Mr. Griffin was born in 1917 in Davenport, Iowa, to Frank James and Dorothy Griffin. He married Virginia Miller on June 6, 1939, in Davenport. She died January 5, 1994. He lettered for three years at Davenport High School in football, basketball and track, and was the State Pole Vault Champion his senior year, 1937. He joined the Davenport Fire Department in 1942, retiring as a district chief after 36 years of service. He was the second generation of the four Griffin firefighters which included his father Frank, son James and grandson Kevin. He currently was a member of the Roosevelt Masonic Lodge 626 and previously the Elks and Moose Lodges.
Survivors include his son, James (Diane) Griffin. and daughter Judith (Robert) Blomgren; and grandchildren, Pamela (Bob) Brandt, Kevin (Jolene) Griffin, Kristen (Mark) Van Earwage, and Dori (Rob) Garro along with nine great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Orville Griffin, and a sister, Jane Miller.
