John was born in West Virginia, September 9, 1869. His parents James Harrison Pitzer and Lydia E. Bowman moved to Indiana when he was two years old. When John was ten years old, they moved to Cooke County, Texas. There he grew to young manhood and was baptized into the Church of the Brethern by S.S Mohler of Missouri, who was doing mission work in Texas at the time. He entered McPherson College in 1891. On May 23, 1894, he was married to Annie Elizabeth Bower daughter of David Bower and Susannah Badger of McPherson, Kansas. To this union five children were born. Alice Ruth Pitzer Beyer, James Paul Pitzer, Gladys Esther Pitzer Schnaithman, Anna Marie Pitzer Atwood, Minnie Maye Pitzer Kerr.
