GOWIN Florence Margaret Gowin Smith

99, of 1036 S. Main St., Towanda, Pa., formerly of 209 Cobbler Lane, Towanda, Wysox Township, Pa., died Friday evening, Dec. 28, 2012 at the home of her daughter, Charlotte Sullivan in Towanda. Florence was born in Terry Township, Bradford County, Pa., on July 28, 1913 the daughter of Cameron Darius Gowin and Carrie Johnson Gowin. She was a graduate of New Albany High School class of 1932. On June 30, 1936 she married Gerald W. Smith at the First Presbyterian Church in Waverly, N.Y. Florence was employed by GTE Sylvania in Towanda for 31 years until her retirement. Florence was a 60-year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Towanda, a member of the Sylvania Women's Club and the Bradford County Historical Society. She was presented a plaque on June 23, 2012 honoring her as the oldest woman present at the Bradford County Historical Society in celebration of the Bicentennial of Bradford County. Her life revolved around her love for her children and grandchildren. Florence enjoyed the outdoors and gardening at her home on Cobbler Lane along the Susquehanna River. She also enjoyed traveling, fishing and sewing. Florence had resided with her daughter, Charlotte since her home on Cobbler Lane was flooded on Sept. 8, 2011. She is survived by her children Charlotte Sullivan, Margaret Potter and Gerald (Sally) Smith; grandchildren David Sullivan, Terry Bowen, Bonnie Potter, Tony Potter, Timmy Potter, Eileen Hicks, Teresa McLinko, Brian Potter, Steven Potter, James Potter, Beth Ann Helsel, Duane Smith and Curtis Smith; great-grandchildren Derrick Sullivan, Cameron Sullivan, LeRae Bowen, Mark Bowen, Kami Bowen, Kati Bowen, Shawn Potter, Nathan Potter, Kristie Spencer, Cory Potter, Timothy Potter, Shannon Hennessy, Tonya Biza, Michael Tuttle, Scott Borick, Jason Borick, Eric Borick, Daniel Potter, Brittany Potter, Emily Potter, Justin Potter, Karina Potter, Tyler Potter, Riley Potter and Bailey Potter; great-great-grandchildren Ely, Aaralyn, Lila, Lucas, Sophia, Kara, Brandon, Nicholas, Madalyn, Shawn, Zander, Chayton, Brynn, Ryder, Kaydance, Chase, Jase, Quinn, Aidan, Rian, Brody, Sierra, Dawson, Nolyn, Molly, Wyatt, Carter, Joshua, Amanda, Kelsey, Brenden, Austin, Connor, Anna and Preston. In addition to her parents, Florence was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Gerald W. Smith on July 13, 1963; seven brothers and sisters-in-law Leonard (Sadie) Gowin, Nathan (Ethel) Gowin, Leo (Idabelle) Gowin, Herbert Gowin, William (Muriel) Gowin, Walter (Dorothy) Gowin and Wayne (Hannah) Gowin; five sisters and brothers-in-law Della Mae Gowin, Susie (Don) Allen, Elizabeth (John) Clark, Marjorie (Joe) Saxon, June (Harold) Cory and Lillian (Howard) Turner; sons-in-law LeRoy "Buddy" Sullivan and Frank Potter. The family extends their deepest appreciation to Florence's granddaughter, Terry Bowen and special friends, Tina Comstock and Wendy Cron, for their loving dedicated care provided during Florence's declining health. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church, 5 Court St., Towanda, Pa., with Rev. Rachel Stahle, pastor, and Rev. Thomas Blackall, a close longtime family friend, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills, Pa.
