U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Missouri, in 1860, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1862 and proceeded to practice law in Sedalia, Missouri. He was a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives, (1872-75) and served in the Missouri State Senate, (1880-84). In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1895. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he practiced law, was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1904 and engaged in banking until retiring in 1922.
