Leonard Carl "Chesty" Bernt, of Primrose, NE. passed away Monday, December 17, 2012 at his home.

Chesty son of John Carl and Margaret Vesta (Kizer) Bernt, was born November 14, 1923 on the family farm northwest of Spalding, NE.

Chesty was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding.

He attended grade school at Country School District #14 North, and graduated from Spalding Public High School in May of 1942.

Following high school he attended vocational school in Kearney, NE until entering the United States Army on May 13, 1943. He served Campaigns in Normandy France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe and was honorably discharged on December 13, 1945.

On October 16, 1948, Chesty was united in marriage to Peggy Primrose at Lexington, NE.

He worked for Behlen Manufacturing in Columbus prior to installing Missile Silos in western Nebraska. In 1965, he began working for Dougdale Construction. He laid concrete for many of the Interstate roads and Airport projects in Nebraska until retiring after nearly 25 years.

They made their home in Primrose where Chesty was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #299 of Spalding, NE; and the International Union of Operating Engineers.

Chesty was a Golden Glove Boxer and never lost an amateur fight. He enjoyed coaching local boxing and was an All-Star baseball player.

Surviving are: children: Janelle McIntyre and husband Rodney of Primrose, NE., Tom Bernt and wife Rae of Kearney, NE., Richard Bernt and wife Julie of Stratton, NE. and Dave Bernt of Primrose, NE.; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: parents, wife Peggy, and siblings: Agnes, Loretta, Bertha, Anna, Edwin, Ray, John, Pat and Mike.

Interment was in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Primrose, NE.
