The people of Ashland were greatly shocked and saddened Thursday morning when it became known that one of the town's most respected citizens John B. Carr passed away at his home on Highland Street during the night about 2 o'clock. Two years ago we understand Mr. Carr had the grippe and since then has not enjoyed the best of health although he has kept about his work. This summer especially, he has frequent poor spells. The day before his death however, he seemed to be feeling well and he made plans for Thursday's work and attending the Harvest Fair on Friday evening. He retired as usual and went to sleep and so far as is known never awakened. His wife was roused by his heavy breathing and realizing something was wrong, hastily summoned their son Fred who got to the bedside only in time to see his father breathe his last.

Mr. Carr leaves besides his widow, three children, Mrs. Cora Jackson, Mrs. Grace Edwards and Fred Carr all of this place. The stricken family has the sincere sympathy of all in this, their sudden loss. Truly no man knoweth in what hour the sublime mystery of life will unfold to his vision. Mr. Carr was a good man, a kind neighbor and will be missed. John B. Carr was born in Holderness March 15, 1834 and therefore was in his seventieth year. His parents are Jacob and Harriet (Beede) Carr. The deceased has always resided here. The funeral will be at the house Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. F.D. George officiating with interment at Green Grove Cemetery. The local Lodge of Odd Fellows being in charge. The Ashland Citizen, October 31, 1903, p5.
