FROSTBURG — Raymond Everald Atkinson, 95, of Frostburg, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home, where he had been a patient for almost two years. Born Sept. 23, 1916, in Midland, he was the son of the late William Atkinson and Catherine “Byrne” Atkinson. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, William Atkinson, John “Jack” Atkinson, Ronald Atkinson and Patrick Atkinson; a sister, Mary E. “Babe” Barclay; a nephew; Ronnie Atkinson and a great-nephew, Timothy Atkinson. Everald was a graduate of Central High School, Lonaconing. He was a Navy veteran of World War II; a lifetime member of Farrady Post 24 American Legion, Frostburg, and a lifetime member of the VFW, Lonaconing. He was also a member of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church where he served in the choir for many years. He is survived by twelve nieces and nephews, Jack Atkinson and Patsy, of Deep Creek Lake, Patsy Atkinson, of Frostburg, Thomasine Weir and husband Allan, of Frostburg, Edna Glass and husband John, of Frostburg, Patrick Atkinson and friend Cindy, of Frostburg; Peggy Skidmore, of Frostburg, Billy Atkinson and wife Wendy, of Frostburg, William Atkinson and wife Cindy, of Cumberland, William Barclay and wife Peggy, of Lonaconing, Paul Barclay and wife Renie, of Westernport, and Catherine Luzier, of Cresaptown. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Edna Atkinson, of Frostburg; a niece, Shirley Atkinson, of Borden; a special friend, Winnie Mehalik, of Frostburg; many great-nieces and nephews; many great-great-nieces and nephews and a special great-great-nephew Justin Michael Barclay, originally from Lonaconing. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Michaels Catholic Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Father Eric Gauchat as celebrant. Interment will be in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery in Midland with full military honors by Farrady Post 24 American Legion Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be nephews Jack Atkinson, Patrick Atkinson, Bill Atkinson, Allan Weir, Bill Warn, and Joseph Barkley. Many thanks to Frostburg Village Nursing Home and to Dr. Wonsock Shin for the wonderful care given to Uncle during these past few years.
