Martin Nielsen is the son of Niels Larsen and Johanne Nielsdatter. He was raised by his maternal grandparents Niels Olsen and Maren Larsdatter.

He is shown as Mads Nielsen on his birth record and on his and Juliane Sophie Hansen's marriage record. They were married on May 25, 1861 in Kværkeby, Soro, Denmark. He may have changed his name Mads to Martin about the time they immigrated to the USA arriving in New York in September 1862.

They lived in Michigan and Illinois before settling in Iowa in about 1869.

In the late 1800's his name Nielsen was Anglicized to Nelson. His farm was located in Audubon and Cass Counties and his house was in Audubon County, a short distance north of the Cass County line.
