Frances Virginia Carson Flournoy
December 20, 1916 - December 15, 2012
Macon, GA- Frances Virginia Carson Flournoy died Saturday, December 15, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, December 16, 2012 at Vineville Baptist church, with the Reverend Tripp Martin officiating. The family will greet friends in the sanctuary following the service. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery.
Frances Virginia Carson Flournoy was born October 15, 1916 in Junction City Georgia to Monte McMillan Carson and Dr. Charles Calhoun Carson of Talbotton, Georgia. Frances was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph Carson and Charles Carson of Tampa, Florida, and two sisters, Retina Allen of Talbotton, and Jewel Chapman of Tampa, Florida. Growing up in Talbotton during the Great Depression, Frances as all members of her generation, had to walk bare foot, five miles to school each day through the rain and snow and only had a biscuit for lunch.
Frances graduated from GSCW (Valdosta State College) and was the May Queen in 1934. After graduating, Frances moved to Gordon, Georgia where she taught fourth grade for three years. One of her students was Jim Williams, the subject of book and movie, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". In Gordon, she met her future husband, Tom Flournoy, Jr., who had sold her insurance. Frances and Tom were married June 2, 1940 .
Frances had many passions in life outside of her family. An avid golfer, Frances played nearly every week at the Idle Hour Country Club and was a regular in tournaments. Frances and Tom shared this special hobby together playing courses together around the country. Frances also had a love for bridge, playing weekly with many close friends for over four decades. She was a founding member of the Shirley Hills Garden Club, and had a special talent for gardening, known especially for her tomatoes and peppers.
One particular hobby was making hooked rugs and sewing. Her Thursday rug making group called themselves the "hookers", years before the name came to be used in a different way. Parties were held after the book and movie (Happy Hookers) came out, and the members would enjoy dressing appropriately at their annual parties. Her love of music began in her early years as a result of her father's interest in music. Dr. Carson required each of his children to play some instrument, and Frances enjoyed playing the piano. She also sang in the choir at Vineville Baptist Church for decades, and was a member of the Morning Music Club.
Probably the biggest passion of her life was the love of her five grandchildren, doing all the special things with each one and taking them shopping. Then came her nine great grandchildren that she enjoyed on every occasion. Frances had a special devotion to her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Pine Pointe Hospice, 6261 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia 31210, or the charity of choice .
Hart's Mortuary and Crematory at the Cupola has charge of arrangements.
