Thomas Geary, who came out of the east to help mold the sprawling village of South Omaha into a city, died Thursday morning at the home of his sister, Mrs. John Stiles in Menominee, Michigan. He was 81 years old. Of giant stature and exceptional strength, Mr. Geary came to Nebraska in 1877, moved and returned to Omaha in 1884 to become a power in its civic life. "Honest Tom" as he was known, was the first treasurer of South Omaha, elected almost unanimously in 1887. He served two years and then retired. His wife served as deputy during his term. Mr. Geary engaged in the real estate business, acquiring a comfortable fortune. His wife was a school teacher; after her death, Mr. Geary traveled extensively.

First Treasurer Dies: OMAHA - Thomas Geary, 81, who in 1887 became the first treasurer of South Omaha, at that time not a part of the city of Omaha, died at the home of a sister, Mrs. John Stiles, in Menominee, Michigan. Geary served two years as treasurer, then retired because he said "grafters" were annoying him. Geary then went into the real estate business. Funeral services will be held here Saturday, with burial in the family plot.

Geary and Dr. Vernard Geary of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, were guests of their cousin, Mrs. John Townsend past week. They are making their trip home by auto and are having a fine trip. This confirms that Thomas Geary and Annie (Ryan) Townsend are cousins. Tom Geary's mother, Mary (Ryan) Geary memorial #122072715 and Annie Ryan's father, Thomas Ryan, burial unknown were siblings.

Mr. James Ryan was 49 years old and beside his immediate family leaves an only sister, wife of Captain Townsend, of Essex, New York. The obituary confirms that Annie (Ryan), Mrs. John Townsend and James Ryan are siblings and that Tom Geary and James Ryan are cousins. James Ryan's father (Thomas Ryan) and Tom Geary's mother (Mary Ryan) are siblings.
