"Twas Ever Thus"

On Thursday afternoon while transacting some business in the Ordinary's office, and just about to leave, a gentleman and lady walked in. There was nothing unusual in their appearance or demeanor, but the editor sensed that something was up, so he lingered just a minute to see the outcome. There was absolutely nothing in their manner or looks to indicate more than that a well dressed and well behaved young man and woman had entered the office of the Ordinary, an occurrence that might and does take place frequently, and yet in the briefest sort of time quiet a crowd of gentlemen had quietly gathered in the room and doorway, eagerly awaiting and watching events.
The young gentleman lost no time, but properly informed Mr. Brown, the accommodating clerk, that he wanted a marriage license, which after a few formal inquiries was promptly filled out and delivered to the gentleman, when he whispered an inquiry to the clerk to ascertain if there was anyone present with authority to execute same and was informed by him that such duties were a part of the function of the Ordinary.
Immediately the swain handed it to Judge Milliean, Carroll's efficient and popular Ordinary, remarking that he would leave it in his keeping, a modest way of asking the Judge to tie the nuptial knot.
Where upon, the lady laid aside her coat and they took position in front of the obliging Judge, and with a codified form of a ministerial formula he declared Arthur Camp and Mrs. Sally Cosper man and wife as deftly as an experienced gentleman of the cloth.
After congratulations the happy couple went their way, as usual, the groom the more embarrassed of the two, and the interested spectators that had gathered as by intuition, fully exemplifying the old adage, that "all the world loves a lover as quietly dropped away as they had gathered round, all with lighter and kindlier hearts from witnessing a repetition of the scene first enacted when Adam and Eve plighted their troth in Eden.
