Mary Jacobs, daughter of John Joseph Jacobs and the former Elizabeth Bettis Kimbrough, was born in Jefferson County, Tennessee on May 2nd 1846. Her mother was believed to be of Native American heritage and loyal to the Union during the Civil War.
In 1852, Mary Rebecca's family moved to Monroe County, Tennessee, where her father purchased 155 acres of farm land. Here Mary met her future husband, Jacob VanBuren Gaston, son of James & Polly Gaston. Jacob, a widower with three small boys married Mary on August 16th 1865.
After the war, Mary and Jacob Gaston moved to Loudon County, Tennessee and raised three sons & a daughter, in addition to his three children.
