William followed his grandfather and several uncles in the occupation of a surveyor. There are numerous surveys signed by William in the South Carolina History Archives.
At the age of 27, William Porter Gaston married Miss Sarah B. Tindall, daughter of Larkin Asa Tindall and the former Martha Going. William and Sarah would have three children:
Trusvan Cheeves (1818-1888)
Asa Harper (1819-1881)
Martha Caroline {Booth} (1822-1877)
Sadly, William Porter Gaston died before his only daughter was born. Sarah, now widowed, pregnant with two young son; would marry Charles Cunningham and emigrate to Limestone, Alabama.
William Porter Gaston was buried in the churchyard cemetery at Fishing Creek Presbyterian, the church of his birth, baptism and marriage.
