John H. Bales was born the 16th of 8th mo 1810 in Guilford County, NC, the only child of Jesse and Ann (Hoskins) Bales/Beals. His father died in 1811 and his mother married secondly Elias Jessup. The family came to Indiana when John was young. In 1830 he was reported at Milford Friends Meeting in Wayne County, IN, for drinking spirituous liquors to excess, but avoided disownment by condemning his misconduct. John married the 2d of 2d mo 1832 at the Duck Creek Meetinghouse in Henry County, Ann Haskett. They were original members at Spiceland Friends Meeting, but John was disowned in 1837 for non-attendance and deviating from plainness. He farmed in Henry County for several decades.

John H. Bales, one of the well known and leading men of Wayne township, died at his home on Wednesday night. He purchased the farm on which he died near fifty years ago, and had all this time been one of the leading, honorable and influential citizens of the county. His disease was cancer from which he had been for many weeks a great sufferer. His children were all with him at the time of his death. The funeral services will occur tomorrow (Saturday) at 10 o'clock, at the late home of the deceased. The remains will be buried in Greensboro after[wards].
