Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Gillespie of 218 Coventry place passed away this morning at 4:50 at St. Anthony's infirmary in Alton of complications of old age.
She was born Feb. 17, 1863, in Hamel township and had attained the age of 86 years, six months and 23 days. She was the daughter of the late Major Thomas Joseph and Mary Jane Eaton Newsham. She was married to Edwin David Gillespie, June 4, 1891, in Decatur. He preceded her in death in 1929 as did one son, David and two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Sanner of Decatur and Mrs. Alice Norris of Detroit, Mich.
One daughter, Mrs. Alice Mayo of this city, survives.
She was educated and graduated from the local school system. She was a member of St. John's Methodist church since 1886. Her life was devoted to activities in and for the church. She was also a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the Ladies aid and chapter E.D.-P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Friends may call at the Lesley Marks funeral home after 12 o'clock noon Sunday until 12 o'clock noon Monday when the body will be taken to St. John's Methodist church to lie in state until 2 o'clock when services will be held with the Rev. John E. Attey officiating.
Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery.
